Command Voice Musical Project

Mission Statement:           This project initiated on Tuesday, April 23 XXXVII.  It began with a dream that I needed to write down.  This dream was centered around two characters.  Ani (who was a form of me) and Maynard.  In the dream, Ani knew Maynard intimately.  In my life I don't know anyone who could fit the description of characters.  However I did know that "Maynard James Keenan " was the vocalist for the popular band TOOL.  I searched in the Internet for information regarding Maynard and found lyrics indicating the possibility that Maynard was aware of the majickal current. I wrote a short story called "Entropy of Winter" based on what I saw in this dream.

The full moon was the following Saturday and in the days between Wednesday and Sunday I found myself consumed by writing.  Words would flow from me, knitting together in description of some sort of query.  A quest. 

I performed a resonance rite on Saturday, April  27 XXXVII and after banishment, I invoked Nebet-Het and Set.  I asked to learn how to listen to the wisdom between the words.  How to become a great lady, in darkness.  To Set, I asked that he blanked my with his winds and that he impart to me some of his wisdom of how to be a great harvester.  I asked him to guide me in my Becoming, to show me that which I must become to Become.

On Sunday our area was hit with a tornado which tore a 6 mile long x .25 mile wide path through our cities most affluent area and it's shopping district.

On Sunday I also had some illumination that I need to develop my "Command Voice."  It was alluded to me that I should think of this as a musical project which I would use that command voice.  My mind objected knowing that:

1)      I have no musical background,

2)      I have no musical experience,

3)      I can't sing,

4)      I don't like to sing

5)      I'm terrified of people. 

I am the antithesis of the performer.  I am trained in photography, which keeps me safely behind the lens and keeps other cameras turned away from my attention.  I like the safe invisibility of the crowd.  I prefer the silence of the majick.  I don't like adoration.  Yet, all of this is being challenged to figure out a way to use my command voice.  Not to develop it at home, but to unite it in concert and perform it.

This terrifies me.

However, I try to listen to the wisdom that comes and I know that I must make an effort to do this.  I have presented my rambling ideas to a friend whom I've known for 20 years and has an exquisite gift in musical areas.  He seemed to be energized by the idea.  My mind is drawn to Patrick Sprawl from DRAIN for guitar.  I haven't talked to him in years, since he played with Sister Machine Gun.  On drums, I don't know who we could get to fill that void.  That will have to resolve itself as we go along.

The lyrics (or the rough bones of them) threw themselves onto paper two days ago and I restructured them into verses and chorus yesterday.  I also laid out the potential stage show that would accompany it.  I worked out the basic technicalities of a stage presence.

I believe that all of this knowledge was given to me to challenge me to use it.  To test me to see if I'll just waste the idea away as an unpalatable idea.  I also know that I'll lose some of my spark if I don't try this.  


Project Name

I am thinking that there is a need for a word, so simple that it instills a majickal concept and doesn't baffle the mind.  I like Io but there is a band called 98o I would worry that the name would compete with that (although the majickal differential of a 1 and a 98 are almost too ironic to ignore)  So, with that, I remain open to information regarding the name for the project.  I do think it should be a one word universal.  Something that means one thing, or many others.  I think TOOL did it right one the name of their project.  Four men, acting as a T O O L for something.  It's clean, simple and effective.



Release Name

I haven't the faintest clue.  Perhaps this will be revealed to me later in the working.  I think there is a deadline that this must be performed by the time I am 33.  So I have a year and a half to get this nailed out and performed.  Yipes!  I don't mind the creative process, in fact I love it, but actually performing will freak me the fuck out!

The release itself and the presenting stage show should be a regular concert.  Plain and simple.  But the music should impart on the Ordeal of the Magician. 

  • The questions tha are ever-restless in the mind. 
  • The yearning for more. 
  • The realization that there is more. 
  • The wanting to become part of that more. 
  • The process of initiation, the feelings that is stirs as one opens themselves up to the mystery world. 
  • The banishment ritual. 
  • The corner callings and invocations. 
  • The ordeals that come from being awake in the world of the sleepers. 
  • The tedium that grows with the weight of power. 
  • Finally resulting in the realization of the wonder that comes with a total acceptance of the Becoming.  The unification with others, the freedom, the zeal. 

The performance is to be a provocative evocation.  Meaning it's purpose is to take a room of people and give them a slice of your feeling and mind, and let them feed upon it and turn it into a frenzy.  Then the group is united in the meta-mind and the mage illustrates the need for them, to assist in tying one to the fabric of our world.  Bind them, tied them to you.  Relish the gift of being human and in the process of growth and enlightenment.  Love.

The final result should be a larger, more united mind.  Draw energy from them.  Feed the universe it's spirit.  Yum yum.

Stage Setup

Obelisks         -           Four obelisks.  Each is a lighting truss.  The bases may need to be reinforced with extended steel plate for structural engineering to accept the weight for the tightrope and swing.  The obelisks can be made of pvc pipe or elastic for weight and portability.  They can be covered with a semi-opaque stretchy fabric.  The crown pyramid can be raised on top of the lighting truss, allowing for a 20" opening for the two lights they will contain.  Give some consideration to the heat resistance of the fabric.  There will be simple projectors located inside each of the obelisks, which will be synced by computer to project various patterns and colors into the columns.  A reflective material will be placed to increase the reflection on the obelisks and the idea is that the obelisk that form the four corners of our performance area will be transformed to complementary colors and surfaces to assist the visual integration of the song.

DVD -  One DVD will be created and a splitter will be used to project onto two screens.  The screens will be butted edge-to-edge together.  The screens will be 5' tall and on the floor.  The percussion stage will be raised to be on top of this screen pediment.  This should provide a good view of the drummer and a rather "fascist" element of architecture.  The screens will project minimalist images.  Sigils, symbols, basic iconography.  Simple photo or movie elements.  What the image is to provide is a unifying force for the audience.  Unite the meta mind.  Using basic Jungian psychology, take images that align properly with the songs and feed the audience an easily relatable image to let them identify with the performance.  Sigils from the various majickal systems.  The tarot suggests a journey from Fool, to enlightenment (Hierophant)   and reunification (Tower/Star)  into The World.  Alchemy describes the physical and social elixirs we use to make it through the day.  The sigils of the spheres of Matter, Mind, Forces, Spirit, Time, Correspondence, Prime are displayed to reinforce certain points.  Elemental triangles, Earth, Air, Fire and Water.  Line, parallel, star, pentagram, unicursal hexagram, dual universal.  Use morph to illustrate that all of these concepts are blended and build upon.  There is no alpha and no omega.there only is Being.  You get the jist.  The final DVD should have the ability to scene select a single song to help with a flexibility of play list, or a longer or shorter set.

Tightrope - his is to be a 1" cable attached by manual wrench winches to the top of the two forward lighting trusses, contained in the obelisks.  I am thinking they should be attached about 10' up and that the obelisk should be 12' high in front (perhaps 8' high in the rear)  Toward the end of the set there is a song illustrating the tenuous nature balance in the walk of the majickian.  This should be used, walked and the song should be performed without catch-aid on this rope.  It may be basic, it may incorporate the Yoga, contortion, dance or other snake-like elements which will illustrate the difficult balance, if the performer is up to the challenge.

Rope trapeze - The last song of the set is a song which should combine all of the energies in the previously performed songs and unite it with the freedom, frenzy, hope and wonderment that comes from enlightenment.  The rope/cables are woven together and a steel/aluminum bar with open ended eye-hooks screwed into the ends should be attached to the cords.  This can be used as a trapeze to spiral from and swing above the crowd.  The range of motion is dependant on the venue which the performance is taking place.  The idea is to show the freedom, and interdependence of us all.  It should impart a feeling that tells the audience "You can fly with this freedom too.come fly."

Track harness (suspension) -  This is most challenging aspect of the performance.  This is the initial song.  This should be the awakening.  The pricking of the neophytes coil into sensing there is something more, if I could only grasp it.  If I could only touch it.  If I only knew that it was real.  The suspension begins above the drummer.  The vocalist is curled up into a ball.   Perhaps in a cocoon that must be escaped from.   As the musicians take the stage and begin to play the introduction, introducing the crowd to the experience.  Pricking them into attention that there may be something more.  The music must be compelling and mesmerizing and of exceedingly high quality.  The lighting will reinforce the nature of the quest.  Four spots will track in dual reflection, out over the audience.  Up and down, left to right.  Droning.  Searching.  It will bathe them in the light as it scans its beam down from above.  The music grows in intensity and the lighting will scan around and form and "X" over the drummer where the vocalist is hanging.  The first verse is sung, hard and aggressive (think "The Grudge from TOOL).  After the first verse, the music quells to a hypnotic groove and two stagehands using a pulley system lower the vocalist slowly out over the stage and descending.  When the vocalists assumes the hanged man position (of the initiate) and toes are barely touching the ground, the second verse is imparted followed by a chorus of manic aggression.  The chorus ends with the vocalist curled up in a ball center downstage.  The vocalist can then use the thumb-release to loosen the vest and put on the priest cassock.  The released cables are pulled up and out of the way and hidden behind the front obelisks.

Laser - There will be one laser.  The laser will be used during the Challenge to form a continuum.  The stage should be a midnight blue with black flame.  This laser continuum begins stage right and continues to stage left.  The previous placement of three sets of mirrors have been arranged and when on single mirrors bisects the continuum laser it refracts into a complete trapezoid.  The trapezoid is a majickal element of angles.  The vocalist should find themselves trapped inside the trapezoid and should perform the song inside of the angles. Searching for a way to push it out. At this point the two stagehands should be inside the two obelisks in the foreground and should use their body to make humanoid impressions pressing outward on the obelisks.  Escape.  Confining.  Breaking out.  Drums should reflect the tribal, primal nature.  Increase the audience adrenaline factor by instilling the fight-or-flight mechanism.  There is a tribal blue UV paint, which is invisible in normal light, but glows like Kali in UV light.  The vocalist and group should be painted in this prior to performance.  Towards the end of the song the trapezoids confines are broken, the angles turn inward and the prohibitioner escapes. Upon escape, the stage is illuminated by a fade in of UV light and the group glows in brilliant purity as they have completed the ordeal.


Lighting Setup

The lighting has a strong through, but is minimal.  A white can placed in front and behind the drummer should direct a illuminated current on his place.  Upstage, over the drummer, a lighting truss (from the venue) should have four lights, two to each side.  Duality should be seen.  Two lights on one side, reflected by two lights on the other side.   These will illuminate the stage and the audience.  In the front two obelisks there will be two additional lights on the ground.  These eight lights will be controlled by a DMX515 controller and programmed for the songs.  An additional spot can be directed on the vocalist if needed.

Strobe light

A simple 750w strobe light may be used for the banishing and corner ritual.  Slice the majick in third.  Let the audience see the majick but only in the after image of the mind.


Costumes

Ideas are like fields of the Nephilim.  Dusty, dark, worn and weary but casual and feasible.

Vocalist costume must be flexible, movable and strong.  It will most likely be a dance/fishnet bodysuit where some sort of climbing harness is incorporated into a futuristic/blade runner patent leather vest/bodysuit where there are lots of thumb release buckles.  Rivets or other metal tab accessories should make it look a little like the "cat woman" suit, but less pretentious.  There should also be a black priest Cossack with loop and button front.  I would assume that some sort of gloves and skirt/pants would be made to complement the suit.  The suspension vest is to be removed after the first song, but it must be powerful enough to make a presence and subtle enough for the suspension to be kept as a background idea.  Let the command voice and the music take presence.


The Outline of Song and Theory

01      -        Isolate                   -        This is the suspension

I am compelled by the structure of "The Grudge" from TOOLS "Lateralus" release.  The introduction melody, followed by an aggressive verse, a calming verse, then a melodic chorus.  I see the musicians take the stage and the lighting is subdued blue.very dark.  The musicians begin the introduction, calling the groove to them, awakening the spirit of the audience.  Remember that our society is numb to everything.  This music needs to stir a primal energy which will cause them to pause and give this an opportunity.  There needs to be an immaculate purity to the sound.  Tap into the universal current and invoke the spirit of understanding.  Reach out to bind them to the will of the music. The lighting scan over the stage slowly and deliberately as the music builds.  They fan out over the crowd, inviting them to be a part of what we are presenting to them.  They scan up and out searching for meaning.  They don't touch them yet.  When the music builds to involvement all lighting will unify into beams over the center of the audience and fan down, bathing the audience in the green light.  After a moment, the lights swing out again and rotate back onto the stage where they deliberately rise in unified polar arcs and form and "X" directly positioned over the drummers head where the vocalist is hanging.  The vocalist goes directly into the first verse of the song.

The music pounds for a 10 count, then the base strums out a dreamy staccato as the vocalist is lowered to the grown down and center stage.  This should be dreamy, like walking in a dream on acid.  When the vocalist is in place, toes just barely brushing the floor and still suspended from the cables the second verse is sung.

I find myself standing
The invocations turned within
It asks me what I've come for
What shall it begin?

With a healthy dose of fear
I gather up the courage
To whisper in its ear..

The music is driving as the chorus is churned with animalistic resonance.

The music goes into explorative unisys of guitar, drum and bass and the lighting fills in the visual storm effect.  Think waves of flattened clouds, wind and the rumbling of thunder as the storm rushes to the call and answers it with electricity.

Feel the edges start to slide
I suck, I suck intensely
I suck it all inside

The song closes with a minimalist bass plucking.  The final verse is a realization that there is more, and that yes,   you have eaten of the tree of knowledge and you are forever changed.  It's a little weary.

This part is spoken against the mechanical drone of musical angels.

This song is once the initiate is awake to the possibilities of the universe, he will call upon those energies to impart to him the wisdom and strength for guidance.  He will begin to tear holes in his reality and his soul.  He will challenge all that he does, and does not know.  He hungers for the Becoming and struggles with his own limited knowledge with his strength and fortitude.  He stretches himself out long and lets his own shadow consume him in curiosity for what he is developing into.

Communication with the daemon

03      -        Crossroads

This song is where the band unites its life force with the audience.  Letting the group know that we are standing on a crossroad.  That there is a doorway up ahead.  A doorway that we must step through.  But we need them to unite with our essence to bind us to this world.  We need their love to cement us to our glorious human form.  We bid them goodbye and thank them for their compassion.  It is a quiet song of shifting sands and isolation winds.  It is odd in timing, and melancholy in thought.  It is the song of lovers going off to possibly lose a battle, but going for duty and bathed in love.  It is hopeful, but distant.

There is it.  The doorways up ahead.

And I must walk this path alone.

I see.  The circle up ahead.

I shuffle to the madness of the throne.

I know that there is no true light.

Only reflections from within.

I am.  That which I must be.

04      -        Banish                  -       

This song has no words.  This is a ritual

This is a strobe light song.  This is probably the first song that can be written.  It will open the gates for the intelligence and transport you into the current.  This is performed 1/3 - ½ way through the set.  Followed by the Invocation ritual.  They segue seamlessly and are both done in strobe light.  These will be an actual banishment and corner call invocation.  The strobe is to provide the necessary mystery to those that wish not to see.  The afterimage will sink the image into the reptilian brain and stimulate sparks of the majickal current lying dormant in the audience.  They will see what they need to see.  Nothing but good music and accompanying dance.  Or they will view the mysteries.

06      -        Ordeals

After our vocalist has had a little break for the previous two songs.  She should be all rested up for this fit of aggressive passion.  Ordeals are battles fought in majick.  An ordeal is a heavy weight delivered to a majickian, a task critical for their development.  There are obstacles and moral dilemmas. One grows weary in war.  A person can potentially be drunk with power.  Can be consumed by death or insanity.  This is a song that illustrates the strength of the spirit to overcome the ordeals.  It should be an assault, but a catchy one.

This is an ecstatic revelation.  It unifies the forces within and outside the magus.  It is the revelry of the full recognition of power and the unification of the forces within.  It is the above, as it is so below.  The outside turns within.

09      -        Tedium

There are two songs for this section.  One or both can be performed.  This is illustrative of the majickian who has assumed the power and grows static in its use.  It's about the status quo and having the courage to change that which has become comfortable to continue the process.

The flesh is so comfortable

09      -        Tedium II


Settled into this crux

Of inactivity

The mantle of high majick

Settles upon me

Sitting fat

Resting on my laurels

I move not an inch

It settles upon me

I toil on the written word

Rehashing the old truths (lies)

And pontificating on

The old dreams (lies)

I am lost to my will

And can only beat the horse long dead

Do I dare to move?

Do I dare to change anything at all?

Am I as brave as a zealot with nothing to lose?

Can I reclaim?

My will before I turn black?

Can I feed the fishes with my body and my blood?

As I stare out

At the undulating masses

The wriggling snakes, the worms for my fodder

They cling

Unable to stand anything

And loath, their adore for my flesh and power

Can I force them to stand on their own?

Do I need their adulation?

Do I need to be adored?

Can  I cast off

My cloak.  Set down my staff, Unsheathe the sword

And do my self in?  Can I release myself from what I have become?

Can I force the rift

To open wider.  Can I pry apart the mouth of the abyss?

Can I impart the knowledge on the edge of the rift?

I will to move on

And through

And into

The nothing.

Can I challenge

All that is revered?  Cut myself wide open

Singing the songs of blood purified on the blade?

Can I cause you to feel.

Can I allow the cracks to show through?

What happens to the wise when they refuse to grow?

What happens to the powerful when it begins to rust?

What can we use for a lubricant for the change?


10      -        Breakthrough

Blood is a song that can follow the "change" song.  It is a chant.  A mantra.  It has heavy vocoder overtones.  

Feel is a song that can follow the "Flesh" song.

Again a polar selection of options for performance.  Two avenues presented from the infinite possibilities.


Blood heals the imperfection

Let it flow for the creation

To begin

Blood to strip old things

Long since worn away

Blood to wash the innocent

To usher in the change

Let it begin.

Blood to wash the blood off.

Obliterate the stain

I want to see with auspex

Of clarity.  I want to be left alone.

I want to feel the fall.

I want to kick God's ass this time.

I want to taste the ichors

Of kether.  Flowing in his veins.

I want to be a charlatan

I want you to see my shadow.

11      -        Balance       -        Tightrope

This is where our lovely agile vocalist treads the wire.  Think yoga, contortion.  Teach the body what flexibility is.  Show that everything is mutable and able to be transformed.  Illustrate what release is to the flesh.  Can perch like a spider, a gargoyle.  Can dance like a bird, a butterfly.  Can grab the wire and spin giants.  There is no catch-wire so the vocalist is 8-10' off the ground with no support and has to sing and be stable at the same time and make it look effortless.  If the audience detects there is any concentration needed to maintain these poses, the trick is useless.

Why is this my path?

I once asked that question and was punished.

Darkness, not an option for the enlightened
